正六角形を基礎にした幾何学文様で、形が麻の葉に似ていることからこう呼ばれます。古来から「麻」は神聖なものとして神事に用いられ、日本では、生まれてきた赤ちゃんには、麻の葉模様の産着を着せる風習がありました。麻の葉は、成長が早く丈夫なので、死亡率の高かった昔、少しでも元気に育ってほしいという願いや、魔除けの意味が込められていたのです。三角形にも魔除け、厄除けの意味があり、その集合体の麻の葉は、より強い意味と美しさがあります。現在も、さまざまな空間で使用されている日本を代表する伝統の文様です。
